Learn like an Egyptian!

In November the Woodpeckers travelled back in time to Ancient Egypt.  They took part in workshops about the Afterlife, put on some entertainment for the Pharoah, learnt about some crazy Egyptian cures for various injuries and illness and learnt how rope was made.  A fun day was had by all, and we even squeezed in 'cuddle corner' and a tractor ride!
Thank you mums and dads for our fantastic costumes to help us really look the part.

Swimming at Sibton Park

The Woodpeckers have been loving their swimming lessons at Sibton Park.  Today's lesson was all about life-saving, making effective rescues, and staying safe in the water.

Carribean Experience with Mrs Carter!

The Woodpeckers returned to school today with a Caribbean vibe.  They always know it's going to be an exciting day when it begins in the Studio with our artist in residence, Mrs Carter.  The children have listened to the Reggae song 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley and have been painting and drawing Jamaican birds and landscapes.  This afternoon, the children worked together to make Caribbean fruit salads to take home and enjoy!

Fantastic Gymnastics!

We have really enjoyed our gymnastics lessons with Kelly this term.  It is fantastic to use our large gym apparatus and as you can see, fun was had by all!

 Exploring History Around Us

In March the Woodpeckers visited Canterbury Cathedral to find out more about the history of this amazing building. We are lucky to have such a significant historical site right on our doorstep and the Woodpeckers really enjoyed discovering why this is such an important place of pilgrimage and prayer!

Learning to Grow!

The Woodpeckers have been literally tasting the success of their efforts growing micro-greens for sale. The fresh boxes of pea-shoots, cress and other super-healthy shoots were quickly sold out! Thanks to Rebecca Smith and Ed Kyrke- Smith from the Kent School of Food who have helped the children learn about growing their own food. The children also planted First-Early potatoes last week which should be ready to harvest in the summer – potato salad at the Summer Fair anyone?

More Gardening!

We have worked hard in The Yard garden over the last two weeks.  Last week we moved 2.5 - 3 tonnes of compost to create our 'no-dig' beds, in less than friendly weather!  This week we received a fantastic box of mixed plants from River Organic Farms.  All of the children helped to plant them, and we have one full bed containing nastursiums, cabbages, lettuce, chard, coriander, kale and much more.

Woodpeckers Go Roman!

The Woodpeckers travelled back in time to Richborough Roman Fort.  This is the site where the Romans landed in AD43 and developed a large town at Richborough.  It was known as the 'Gateway to Britannia'.  Thanks to Drew for driving us in the mini-bus and to English Heritage Volunteer, Martin, who took us on a tour of the site and helped us to imagine what the site would have looked like.  The highlight of the day was climbing the ladder to the top of the reconstructed tower to get a bird's eye view of the site.

Building Roman Arches

The Woodpeckers have been learning more about Roman Arches following their visit to Richborough Roman Fort earlier this term. They drew columns, pilasters and mouldings with attention to detail, before attempting to draw 3D arches, then create arches using boxes and careful drawing.

Imagination Competition!

Oliver in Woodpeckers' class won a competition to take part in a workshop with the Institute of Imagination.  The Woodpeckers thoroughly enjoyed sharing in Oliver's win, making their 'Wild City' from Lego and recycled materials.

Wild Day Out!

The Woodpeckers were 'Led by the Wild' today at Aldington.  They all had a fabulous time hapazoming, making 'smores, building waterproof dens, crafting and taking part in a nature walk.  They explored self-led activities, including: clay animals, mud-kitchen fun, puppet-show, relaxing in the hammock and the quiet tent, and hanging out on the 'floor is lava' rope adventure course.  It was such an amazing day that the children didn't want to come back!
